For 51 years, Larry Hatteberg brought a special kind of television to Kansas. His constant search for ordinary people, whose stories illuminate larger issues, put him in a position to develop a personal relationship with Kansas viewers.

On Nov. 25, 2014, Larry left KAKE-TV to pursue stories that he’s wanted to do for years, but could not, due to the requirements of daily television journalism.

Throughout the nation, he is known as an Emmy award-winning video storyteller who can “touch” people with his television journalism. With more than 120 national, regional and state awards, Larry has helped set broadcast standards for television journalists all over the world.

His national award-winning “Hatteberg’s People” series was the longest running television feature in Kansas.  Nearly- two thousand Kansans have been profiled. The series has taken Larry to 17 foreign countries in search of Kansas people.

In 2016, Larry was asked to create a "Hatteberg’s People" half-hour show for PBS affiliate KPTS (Channel 8) in Wichita. Relying on the vast Hatteberg’s People story file to show those stories that have made a difference to Kansas viewers.  He is joined by his longtime co-anchor and friend, Susan Peters.

Based on the TV series, Larry published two successful books and DVDs called “Larry Hatteberg’s Kansas people”. These best-selling books and DVDs profile Kansans who make the state a unique place to live.

Larry’s television career began at KAKE in 1963 when he started as a part-time film lab technician. He’s been a photographer, chief photographer, assistant news director, executive news director and was prime-time co-anchor of KAKE News at Five and 10 p.m. with co-anchor Susan Peters.

There are few major awards Larry hasn’t won, including a regional Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He has also received an Emmy for Lifetime Achievement.

Hear a preview of Larry's talk on this episode of KFB's Inside Ag podcast.
