Wind Energy Seminar: The Whirlwind Tour

New seminars on wind energy law are scheduled across Kansas providing detailed insight on legal ramifications of contracts and other wind energy issues.

While the seminars are largely to help get attorneys dealing with wind issues 'on the same page,' the seminars are of great interest to those who may have, or will have, a wind tower on or near their property.

The Kansas Farm Bureau Legal Foundation is a leader in coordinating this event through the Kansas Bar Association Ag Law section.  The seminar schedule is:

Tuesday, May 13 — Garden City
Wednesday, May 14 — Hays
Thursday, May 15 — Wichita
Friday, May 16 — Salina

KFB Legal Foundation Director Mike Irvin (pictured above standing) presented a workshop on how the Legal Foundation is working to assist farmers and

ranchers across the state. Other workshops included market fundamentals, update on animal I.D. and country of origin labeling procedures, pesticide/fertilizer regulations, and updates on KFB Agriculture Solutions, KFB’s water resource’s program, and Kansas Water Law.

METHANE GAS SESSIONS POPULAR IN SOUTHEAST KANSAS.  Private sector natural gas developers are stepping up their efforts to extract methane gas from coal beds beneath the earth’s surface in eastern Kansas. These efforts bring a host of new questions, concerns and potential business decisions for farmers and ranchers.

More than 400 farmers and ranchers had the opportunity to ask such questions at two informational sessions hosted by county Farm Bureaus on Jan. 27.  Montgomery County Farm Bureau hosted a session in Independence, while Franklin County hosted an evening presentation in Ottawa. More than 200 landowners attended each session to learn the potential opportunities and possible pitfalls.

Larry Brady, senior scientist for geologic investigations for the Kansas Geological Survey, spoke to a packed house to discuss how methane gas is formed and the potential for the new natural gas in southeast Kansas. He recommends the Kansas Geological Society Web site to all interested landowners: http://www.kgs.ukans.edu/CBM/index.html.

KFB General Counsel Terry Arthur and KFB Legal Foundation Director Mike Irvin spoke to the group regarding methane leases and legal issues. Arthur and Irvin answered numerous questions following their presentations, such as what landowners should know before and after signing a lease, what to expect as the lease expires and potential adverse affects if the property is sold.
