Be Ag Wise: Professional Development Workshop

Sign up now to attend one of four workshops that will be offered in early 2009.  These workshops will focus on Natural Resources and are designed especially for agriculture education presenters at the county level.  Workshops are scheduled on Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. and will be held in Manhattan (Jan 17), Emporia (Jan 24), Colby (Feb 21) and Garden City (Feb 28).  Be Ag Wise registration forms are due by January 2, 2009.  There is a registration fee of $45 per participant which includes lunch.

Following the workshop you will be equipped to lead training sessions on such topics as: There's a Watershed in My Backyard, Piece Like a River, Prairie Food Chains and Food Webs, Photosynthesis Activity, Flower Power, Soil Infiltration Activity and Mudshake.  Participants will have the opportunity to: receive training for a variety of Ag-based hands-on learning labs, receive resource materials, share ideas that work, practice presentation skills, network with others and to recap success stories from the 2008 training.

Hay and Forage Conference

Forage research will be the key topic at the Kansas Hay and Grazing Conference in Manhattan.

Andy Hopkins, a researcher for the Noble Foundation, will deliver the keynote address on the subject Jan. 14 at the Kansas Farm Bureau building.  The event, which starts with registration at 8:30 a.m., is for anyone interested in livestock grazing, hay production and the state's grass and hay products.  Other topics to be covered during breakout sessions include updates on the Country of Origin Labeling (COOL), grass-fed beef, cellulosic biofuels, use of byproduct supplements and watch lists for invasive plants in Kansas.

The event is sponsored by Kansas State University Research and Extension and Kansas Forage and Grassland Council.

Keeping the Farm in the Family --- Farm Transition Workshops - Families Encouraged to Attend Training
K-State ESARP

Bringing family members into the farm business and passing the farm from one generation to the next can be the best - and worst - of times. To help families develop a plan to suit their operation, K-State Research and Extension and the K-State Farm Analyst Program will again host "Keeping the Family Farming" workshops in January, 2009.

The topics to be addressed include: Understanding Tax Repercussions and Legal Issues in Selling and Transferring Assets; Comparing Business Entity Options; Estimating Financial Needs in Retirement; Evaluating Strategies for Transferring the Family Farm; Making Explicit Plans; Determining your Current Financial Situation; and Being Aware of the Potential for Conflict and Identifying Ways to Resolve it.

The workshop dates and locations include:

* Fri., Jan. 2 and Sat., Jan. 17 - Chanute

* Fri., Jan. 3 and Sat., Jan. 16 - El Dorado

* Fri., Jan. 10 and Fri., Jan. 30 - Garden City

At the end of the meetings in each location, the families will have the option of meeting with someone from the Farm Analyst program to review their personal situation.

The cost for the two-day session is $225 per family of four, if paid by Dec. 15, plus $75 for each additional participant. The cost per family of four after Dec. 15 is $300. The fees include all materials, two lunches and one evening meal.

Scholarship Program for Registered Kansas Agritourism Operators

For the 3rd year, the Agriculture Marketing Division of the Kansas Department of Commerce is sponsoring a
$25,000 scholarship program for registered Kansas agritourism operators to attend conferences, seminars and educational tours. 

Please note that applications will be reviewed 2 times this year:  August 1, and January 1.  Awards will be made within one month of the due dates.  Awards may be granted to agritourism operators that have previously been awarded scholarship funding through this program. Mark your calendars for June 23 - 27, 2009!  Hosted at the Millennium Hotel, on the bank of the Mississippi, between the Arch and Busch Stadium and the soon to be completed Ballpark Village.  Arrive Tuesday or Wednesday, events start Wednesday afternoon with traveling workshops on Friday.  Rooms for single, double or quad guaranteed for $129.

Women Managing the Farm 2009 Annual Conference

To aid women who are helping to grow the nations food supply whether by design, marriage or inheritance, the Women Managing the Farm Conference is slated for February 12-14, 2009 in Hutchinson, Kan.

Over the 2 1/2 days of the conference, presentations regarding business planning, health, managing employees and more will be interspersed with opportunities for networking and learning from others attending the conference.  The WMF conference has been developed for all women involved in an operation from the fulltime manager to the absentee landowner needing a bit of insight about managing their investment.
