2016 KFB Photo Contest

The annual Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) Photo Contest is hosted by the state Young Farmers & Ranchers (YF&R) Committee. The contest is open to any amateur photographer who is a Farm Bureau® member of any county in Kansas.

Prizes:

Individual Categories

  • First place in each category - $300
  • Second place in each category - $150

Overall

  • People’s Choice - $250

Rules

  • Photos may only be submitted by the original photographer.
  • To be considered an “amateur,” the photographer may not receive any income from photography.
  • The photographer must be an associate or voting member of Kansas Farm Bureau.
  • All three categories of the contest are open to photographers of all ages.
  • Employees of Farm Bureau, its affiliated companies, and their immediate families are not eligible to participate in the contest.
  • Photos in the contest cannot have been, and may not be, entered in any other contest, including but not limited to 4-H, FFA, etc.
  • Please follow these farm safety guidelines when submitting photos to the contest. Any photo showing compromising farm safety images will not be allowed in the contest.
  • All photos must be submitted in JPG format by upload.
  • Participants may submit up to one photo in each of the three categories.
  • Photos will be judged on the use of angle, lighting, balance, color, contrast, viewpoint and technical ability.
  • Kansas Farm Bureau reserves the right to disqualify photos for any reason.
  • Finalists will be notified by email.
  • All photos become the property of Kansas Farm Bureau.

The top two winning entries from each category will be notified by email. Those photos will be displayed at the KFB Annual Meeting in December and posted on the KFB website. The top two finalists from each category will move on to the People’s Choice competition. The People’s Choice winner will be decided by attendees of the Kansas Farm Bureau Annual Meeting.

Kansas Farm Bureau may, without offering any consideration to or obtaining the permission of its submitter, use any such photograph for any purpose, such as publishing in Kansas Living and/or Farm Leader Letter, posting it on KFB’s website, reproducing it for Farm Bureau use, or selling it as a fundraiser.

DEADLINE: Entries must be received by 11:59 pm on October 1.

2017 YF&R of the Year Award

The Kansas Farm Bureau Young Farmer & Rancher of the Year Award Program is designed to recognize those Young Farmers & Ranchers who have excelled in their farming/ranching operations and honed their leadership abilities to superiority. The contestant(s) will be evaluated on a combination of farm operation growth and financial progress, Farm Bureau leadership, as well as leadership outside of Farm Bureau. More specifically, the judges will be looking for excellence in management, scope of the enterprise and self-initiatives that have been displayed throughout the operation.

Application Deadline: December 15, 2016

Interview Date for Finalists: January 28, 2017 (Manhattan, KS)

Applicants for the YF&R of the Year Award must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a voting Farm Bureau member of a county Farm Bureau in Kansas between the ages of 18 and 35.
  • May be an individual or a married couple.  To qualify, the individual or spouse will not have reached their 36th birthday by January 31st, 2018.
  • Must be a member in good standing with their county Farm Bureau.
  • Must be actively engaged in farming and/or ranching with the majority of his/her income from production agriculture.
  • Winner will advance to the 2018 AFBF Achievement Award competition.
  • Applicant may only compete in one national YF&R competition per year.

Prizes:

  • First Place - $500 + expense paid trip to compete in the national contest at the 2018 AFBF Annual Convention
  • Second Place - $300
  • Third Place - $200
  • Fourth Place - $100

2017 Excellence in Agriculture Award

The Kansas Farm Bureau Excellence in Agriculture Award Program is designed to recognize Young Farmers & Ranchers, who actively contribute and grow through their involvement in Farm Bureau and agriculture. Participants will be judged on their involvement in agriculture, leadership ability, involvement/participation in Farm Bureau and other organizations.

Application Deadline: December 15, 2016

Presentation Date for Finalists: January 28, 2017 (Manhattan, KS)

Applicants for the Excellence in Agriculture Award must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a Farm Bureau member in Kansas between the ages of 18 and 35.
  • May be an individual or a married couple.  To qualify, the individual or spouse will not have reached their 36th birthday by January 31st, 2018.
  • Must be a member in good standing with their county Farm Bureau.
  • Must not derive the majority of his/her income from an owned production agricultural operation in the past three years.
  • Winner will advance to the 2018 AFBF Excellence in Agriculture Award competition.
  • Applicant may only compete in one national YF&R competition per year.

Prizes:

  • First Place - $500 + expense paid trip to compete in the national contest at the 2018 AFBF Annual Convention
  • Second Place - $300
  • Third Place - $200
  • Fourth Place - $100

2017 Collegiate Ag Quiz Bowl

The Collegiate Ag Quiz Bowl is open to teams from the Collegiate Farm Bureau chapters in Kansas. Contestants will demonstrate their knowledge of the following topics relating to Kansas agriculture:

2017 Ag Quiz Bowl Rules

    Prizes:

    • The winning team receives the travelling trophy to display at their school for 1 year. An engraved plaque with the team’s name and year will be added to the trophy.
    • Each of the four members of the winning team will receive $50

    They YF&R Discussion Meet challenges young producers to analyze agricultural issues and decide on solutions that best meet their needs.  The competition is designed to simulate a committee meeting where discussion and active participation are expected from each participant. Contestants build basic discussion skills, develop a keen understanding of agricultural issues and explore how groups can pool knowledge to reach consensus and solve problems through discussion of pre-selected topics.

    Competition Date: January 28, 2017 (Manhattan)

    Applicants for the Discussion Meet must meet the following criteria:

    • Must be a Farm Bureau member in Kansas between the ages of 18 and 35.  The individual will not have reached his/her 36th birthday by January 31, 2018.
    • Must be a member in good standing with their county Farm Bureau
    • Must be actively engaged in agriculture
    • Professional speakers are not eligible (receive a fee, royalty or honorarium for speaking)
    • Past and present AFBF DM competitors, AFBF YF&R committee members, past KS YF&R DM winners and current employees of county, state and/or American Farm Bureaus and their affiliates are not eligible to compete.
    • Winner will advance to 2018 AFBF Discussion Meet competition.

    Prizes:

    • First Place - $500 + expense paid trip to compete in the national contest at the 2018 AFBF Annual Convention
    • Second Place - $300
    • Third Place - $200
    • Fourth Place - $100

    2017 Collegiate Discussion Meet

    The Collegiate Discussion Meet challenges participants to analyze agricultural issues and decide on solutions that best meet their needs.  The competition is designed to simulate a committee meeting where discussion and active participation are expected from each participant.     Applicants for the Collegiate Discussion Meet must meet the following criteria:

    • Must be a Collegiate Farm Bureau member in Kansas between the ages of 18 and 35.  The individual will not have reached his/her 36th birthday by the last day of February 2018.
    • Must be an undergraduate college student in Kansas.
    • Must not be enrolled in a graduate-level program at the time of the competition.
    • Must display a sincere interest in the agriculture industry.
    • Professional speakers are not eligible (receive a fee, royalty or honorarium for speaking).
    • Past and present AFBF CDM/DM competitors, AFBF YF&R committee members, past KS YF&R CDM/DM winners and current employees of county, state and/or American Farm Bureaus and their affiliates are not eligible to compete.
    • Winner will advance to 2018 AFBF Collegiate Discussion Meet.

    Prizes:
