MANHATTAN — A conceptual family comprised of a couple in their 40s with two teenage children could save nearly $29,000 in premiums next year with a Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) Health Plan compared to a gold plan purchased through the Health Insurance Marketplace based on a recent quote comparison.
“We run this comparison every fall when the marketplace begins open enrollment to see how our coverage compares to the broader market,” says KFB Health Plans Director Erin Petersilie. “Every year we continue to see the incredible value Health Plans offers individuals and families when they’re seeking affordable health coverage.”
In the example case, a family of four could purchase a traditional family plan with a $1,500 deductible for $913 a month through KFB Health Plans. Similar coverage from a leading insurance provider carried a monthly price of $3,312.94, despite having a 28 percent higher out-of-pocket maximum. Another company’s comparable coverage was priced at $2,912.91 per month.
KFB Health Plans rates were also lower for a bronze-equivalent plan at $775.50 per month compared to the comparison provider’s $2,229.32.
Nearly 19,000 Kansans receive coverage through KFB Health Plans, which are individually underwritten, and some plans require a physical prior to receiving coverage if applicants are over 40. KFB Health Plans offers individual and family plans, plus short-term coverage to fill in temporary gaps for people under 65.
Unlike insurance offered through the Health Insurance Marketplace, there is no open-enrollment period for KFB Health Plans.
“If you miss the Jan. 15 deadline to sign up for an exchange plan, we accept new members every day,” Petersilie says. “Even if you currently have an exchange plan, I’d be happy to help you compare cost and coverage to see if we could help you save hundreds of dollars each month, possibly more.”
A paid Kansas Farm Bureau membership is required to begin enrollment.
